I lived in the dorm my freshman year of college. I made it my mission not to get involved in any one's trails and tribulations. I didn't want anything to do with anyone's problems but my own. Yet some kind of way there was always a knock at my door from someone needing this, and someone needing that. Each time I would tell myself, next time I'm turning them away, but it always came to pass, I was right back in a situation where my help was needed. In my studies today, I found that all those times I didn't turn people away, God was taking note of that and blessing me in return.
Many times we like to say to other people's situations, "that's non of my business". We see a lady in a dispute on the street with a man obviously three times bigger than her and we say, "that's non of my business". We pass the homeless man asking for some change all the time and we say, "that's non of my business". Well, from what I learned and studied, I found that when we say "that's non of my business" when it comes time for judgement day and when we are asking to enter the pearly gates, God will turn and say, "that's non of my business".
You may ask why this is? Well the answer was made very clear for us in Matthew.
Matthew 25:34-46
34 -36"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what's coming to you in this kingdom. It's been ready for you since the world's foundation. And here's why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.'
37 -40"Then those 'sheep' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?' Then the King will say, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.'
41 -43"Then he will turn to the 'goats,' the ones on his left, and say, 'Get out, worthless goats! You're good for nothing but the fires of hell. And why? Because— I was hungry and you gave me no meal, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was homeless and you gave me no bed, I was shivering and you gave me no clothes, Sick and in prison, and you never visited.'
44"Then those 'goats' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn't help?'
45"He will answer them, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me—you failed to do it to me.'
46"Then those 'goats' will be herded to their eternal doom, but the 'sheep' to their eternal reward."
You don't know who you are turning away when you decide to turn away or turn your back on your fellow man. It is important that we as Christians continue to be walking examples of Jesus Christ and his works. Our attitude is very important when being a witness for the Lord. In college, Lord knows I was not a saint, but I was conditioned to help. I had great examples in my parents. Nevertheless, I know for my self now, why it is important to help others. I challenge you today to help the next person who ask for it. As a matter of fact, don't wait to be approached, if you see someone in need, just help them. You do not know what a helping hand will do for someone. Until next time...
