Many times we sin for one reason and one reason alone; a lack of self control. We ignore that reason because we do not want to face that when we are working off our own powers, we always fall short. Its hard to swallow the fact that we can't live an effective life without Jesus. Nevertheless, the time has come to be submissive and just acknowledge that you cannot do it all by yourself.
Self control comes when you are all wrapped up in Jesus and you know what thus says the Lord. It comes when you know the Word of God. It comes when you know whats right and whats wrong. When you have the holy spirit living in you, convicting you when you are doing something you are not suppose to be doing, then you can practice self control.
Its hard to have self control when you are out of the will of God. That is why many people go through such hardships and perhaps even land in jail because they cannot achieve self control. Bottom line, self control is really acknowledging that you have no control at all. Its understanding that God is the one controlling your life.

[Self-control, then, is being in control of one's self; in the context
of the Scriptures, the control of self so as to be in harmony with the
will of God.
But it is a whole lot easier to define than it is to develop...]
